About you and your foundation
What motivated and inspired you to start your foundation? A few years ago I lost both my mother and grandmother to cancer. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 and I found a lump in my breast the same year but it wasn’t cancerous. Late 2010 my grandmother was also diagnosed with cancer and passed on. Then in 2011 my mother was diagnosed with cancer again (pancreatic cancer) which in a short amount of time took her life. This was a tough time for my family because we knew nothing about cancer, what causes it and the treatment necessary for it. I started doing my research and that’s where I came up with The Disebo Cancer Foundation named after my late mother. I started the Foundation to raise cancer awareness, help encourager women to go for regular check ups and help the less fortunate. Tell us about your foundation? The Disebo Cancer Foundation focuses on raising cancer awareness through projects such as advertorials, in addition to collecting clothes, non perishable food items and toys, which are then donated to those affected by Cancer during the Christmas season. I attended primary school at Unicom at Tweespruit, high school started at Christiaan De Wet until grade 10 then grade 11 and 12 at Tlotlanang combined school. I furthered my education at CUT Studying Human Resource Management 2010 graduated National Diploma then I went on to further my studies and I completed my B-Tech. in 2011. February 2012 I volunteered at the Department of Education at Lejweleputswa District then in September I applied for an internship at Department of Education, which I got. What motivated and inspired you to start your business? I was really frustrated where I was working; my work didn’t give me that feeling of been alive. I knew it was up to me to make a change in my life, I then decide to turn my hobby into a career. During my internship, I had enrolled at Biosculpture for the manicure course, this I was doing as a hobby, never realizing it would one day be my business path. During my training, my sister would volunteer to my model, I remember the first day I did her nails it took us hours. I wanted her nails to be perfect and she was so patient with me. With time and lots of practice, I was good at it, even though at that time I was doing it for fun. How did you start your business? When I was 19 I opened a Clicks account and on the clicks account there was a savings account from Old Mutual, at that time I didn’t even think the Old Mutual application would be processed as I didn’t have a stable salary, I was still a student. But I want ahead with the application and the following month a debit order from Old Mutual went through and a savings account was born. So, coming back to the present, when I decided that I would like to open my own business, I remembered my savings account and I called my financial planner to have the funds released. I then took a step to open my business. Even though it did not feel like a great decision at that time, because I felt like my savings hadn’t matured enough but now I believe I made the right choice. Even though some of it was self-funded, my aunty was there to help me in hard times, as she believed in me and my dream. I cannot forget the assistance and support my family has also given me. What have been your biggest challenges so far with running your business? I really haven’t encounter any challenges, as I have a strong support structure from my family and business mentor. What do you look for when hiring someone? I have not hired someone on permanent basis but this is what I would look for someone who will support what the business wants to achieve, who is willing to be part of the team and is confident to carry out tasks assigned. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs? Successful people have strong belief in their abilities. So believe in yourself. What does it mean to you, to take a leap and what has been that leap that you took as an entrepreneur? I left the programme that would have allowed me to have a permanent job by now, to go start something that I’m not sure where it will take me. |
